Gas prices increase

The price of gas has risen five per cent since last week, suggesting that energy customers should expect further cost increases in bills in the coming months.

According to reports, the price per therm of gas for delivery during the first few months of 2009 is now over £1, despite the fact that supplies are traditionally cheaper over the summer months.

The Times reports that the price of gas last winter was less than half of its current cost.

Speaking to the newspaper, a spokesman from British Gas owner Centrica said that gas prices for the UK are almost equal to those of the world's biggest gas importer, Japan.

He added: "We're having to buy in a world market and pay world prices."

Concerns over the rising cost of energy have come after npower recently announced a £20 discount on all of its products.

People in the UK are only eligible for the offer if they register for the company's tariffs via its website.ADNFCR-1054-ID-18631173-ADNFCR
